Choosing the right trailer
What is the best trailer for a ute or 4WD?
Start with the job. Soil, gravel and rubble? Get a tipper trailer. Moving a machine? A plant trailer. Pallets, tools and materials? A flatbed or box trailer. Gear that has to stay dry and locked up? An enclosed trailer. Every trailer we sell is under 3,500kg ATM, so any ute can tow it on a car licence.
What size trailer do I need?
Work out your heaviest regular load, then pick a trailer whose payload covers it. Check the trailer’s ATM against your tow vehicle’s braked towing capacity and you are done. Our Trailer Load Calculator does the sums for you.
Should I buy a box trailer, a flatbed or a tipper?
Shifting bulk loads like soil, mulch and gravel? Buy a tipper, it’s a massive time saver. Carrying pallets, timber and long loads? Buy a flatbed. Want both? A box trailer with removable sides turns into a flatbed in minutes.
Single axle or tandem axle trailer?
Single axle is lighter and easy to handle for small loads. Tandem is more stable, carries more and goes up to 3,500kg ATM. Tri-axle suits the longest, heaviest loads.
What is the best trailer for landscaping, building or farm work?
Landscapers love a tipper or a combi trailer with ramps. Builders go for a tipper, plant or enclosed trailer. Farms pick a tipper, box or flatbed for feed, soil and equipment. Not sure? Call (02) 4367 0026 and tell us the job.
Weights and towing explained
What do ATM, tare and payload mean?
ATM is the most the trailer can weigh fully loaded. Tare is what it weighs empty. Payload is ATM minus tare, which is what you can actually carry. Lower tare means more payload for the same ATM.
Why does low tare weight matter?
Every kilo of trailer is a kilo you can’t carry. Our galvanised, aluminium-sided trailers are built light, so more of the ATM becomes payload, they hitch easier and you use less fuel.
Can my vehicle tow it?
Match the trailer’s ATM to your vehicle’s rated braked towing capacity. Smaller trailers suit SUVs and mid-size vehicles. The 3,500kg ATM models need a ute or 4WD rated to tow 3,500kg. Ring us with your vehicle details and we will confirm.
Do I need a special licence?
No. Every trailer we sell is under 3,500kg ATM, so a standard car licence is all you need.
Brakes and compliance
Do I need an electric brake controller?
No. Hook up and go. Our trailers use ADR-approved mechanical overrun brakes with an emergency breakaway cable, so there is no controller to buy, fit or swap between vehicles. Any vehicle rated to tow the trailer’s ATM can tow it.
What is the difference between electric and overrun brakes?
Electric brakes need a brake controller in every tow vehicle. Overrun brakes are mechanical and work through the coupling on their own, so there is nothing to wire up. That is why fleets, farms and councils prefer them.
Do trailers need brakes?
Trailers over 750kg ATM need brakes, and heavier trailers need braking on all wheels. Our braked trailers meet these requirements. Check your own state’s rules for the exact thresholds.
What do RVSA, VSB1 and ADR mean?
RVSA is the Road Vehicle Standards Act, the national approval system. VSB1 is the Vehicle Standards Bulletin covering trailer approval. ADR are the Australian Design Rules for safety. Our trailers are RVSA approved, ADR compliant and road legal in every state and territory, and we handle the compliance paperwork.
How do I register my trailer?
Registration is the normal process in your state, and we supply the compliance documentation so you can register and tow.
Quality and materials
Why are your trailers galvanised?
Every chassis is hot-dip galvanised, so the steel is protected inside and out and built to last. That matters on the Central Coast and anywhere salt air, mud and weather chew through painted steel.
Why choose a Danish or European trailer over a painted steel trailer?
Danish quality and design, European style and strength. You get a galvanised chassis, overrun brakes with no controller, aluminium sides that come off to make a flatbed, lower tare for more payload, genuine AL-KO and Knott running gear and parts support in Australia.
Are parts and servicing available?
Yes. We stock genuine AL-KO and Knott spare parts, jockey wheels, ramps, tarps and wheels, delivered across Australia, with a free AL-KO ETI parts search.
Trailer-specific questions
What is the difference between a 1-way and a 3-way tipper trailer?
A 1-way tips to the rear. A 3-way tips to the rear and both sides, which is the one you want for narrow streets, driveways, footpaths and tight access.
Can a tipper trailer also be used as a flatbed?
Yes. The aluminium sides and corner posts come off in minutes, so one trailer does both jobs.
Which trailer carries a mini excavator or skid steer?
A plant trailer or beavertail with ramps. Match the machine’s weight to the trailer’s payload, and the trailer’s ATM to your tow vehicle.
What is the difference between a plant trailer and a beavertail trailer?
A plant trailer is a machine transporter with a back ramp. A beavertail has a sloped rear deck for a lower loading angle, which suits low-clearance machines.
How do I choose an enclosed trailer?
Pick the internal length and payload for your gear, then the access: rear doors, a ramp or a side hatch. Pro enclosed trailers add dual rear doors with heavy-duty bar locks.
What is the difference between a fridge trailer and a freezer trailer?
A fridge (refrigerated) trailer holds 0°C for fresh food and drinks. A freezer trailer holds down to -20°C for frozen goods, using GOVI cooling and insulated panels. The ultimate towable esky.
How many people does a mobile office trailer hold?
Our Scanvogn mobile office trailers suit 4 to 12 staff, with options for a tank or macerator toilet, a kitchenette and optional air conditioning.
Which trailers suit mining sites, remote camps and events?
Mining and remote sites use Scanvogn mobile office trailers, crew crib and lunchroom trailers, decontamination trailers and shower and toilet trailers, with EcoTrailer solar options for stand-alone sites. Events use portable toilet trailers, ensuite trailers, fridge and freezer trailers, bar trailers and ticket booth trailers, and councils and event organisers buy them for festivals and public events.
What portable toilet and shower trailers do you sell?
Single bathroom trailers, multi-cubicle toilet and shower trailers, accessible and disabled bathroom trailers and 4+2 toilet trailers, in tank, macerator, vacuum or combustion toilet systems. Own the asset instead of renting portaloos.
Which container trailer do I need, 10ft or 20ft?
Match the trailer to the container: a 10ft container trailer for a 10ft container, a 20ft for a 20ft. Our Vlemmix container trailers have a low 680mm deck and twistlock mounts.
How do I choose a boat trailer?
Match the trailer’s rating to your boat and gear weight and length. The Ocean Series suits boats to 2,700kg total weight and the Super Roller Series to 3,500kg. Kayak trailers carry up to 8 kayaks.
