Jockey Wheels and Stands: Essential Trailer Accessories for Stability and Manoeuvrability

 In Trailer Tips

Jockey wheels and stands are indispensable tools for anyone who owns a trailer. They provide crucial support, safety and make stabilising your trailer much easier. Here’s a breakdown of their features and benefits:

Versatile Applications

These products are designed for multiple uses:

  • Stabilising the trailer nose: When your trailer is detached from the tow vehicle, a jockey wheel stand provides essential balance support to keep the nose of the trailer stable and level.
  • Stay-bar for trailers: These act as a reliable support while the trailer is parked or being loaded.
  • Easy trailer movement: A jockey wheel allows you to move and position most lightweight  trailers with ease, when it’s not hitched to your vehicle.

Durable and Low-Maintenance

  • Surface Treatment: KNOTT Jockey wheels and stands are treated for durability, typically with hot dip galvanised or galvanisation. This protective coating helps prevent rust and corrosion, ensuring a long lifespan.
  • Low Maintenance: These products are designed for minimal upkeep, saving you time and effort. Just grease as necessary.

Key Advantages

  • Swing-away option: Many models offer a swing-away feature, enhancing safety and convenience during travel.
  • Smooth Operation: Wheels are equipped with solid rubber and either needle roller or sliding bearings for smooth and efficient movement.
  • Durable Components: Steel plate driving levellers with bearings and a 5mm pin contribute to the product’s robustness.
  • Automatic or Fixed Options: You can choose between automatic or fixed jockey wheel models to suit your specific needs.
  • Rotatable Design: Trailer Jockey wheels can rotate up to 90 degrees, adding to their versatility.

Retractable – Most popular for heavy duty trailers. This is where the wheel retracts into up and into the frame that it is mounted to.

  • Corner stands or corner steadies. These are fold away or retractable. Used to balance your trailer from front to back and mounted at each corner. They are also designed for managing heavy loads -moving machinery on and off your trailer safely.

Operating the Swing-Away Swivel Jack

The swing-away swivel design significantly enhances travel safety by ensuring the jockey wheel or prop stand is correctly positioned.

  • Traveling: Before setting off, always put the jack in the horizontal position. This prevents the wheel from contacting the ground and potential damage. Ensure any keys or clamps are fixed correctly.
  • Stationary: When stopped, put the jack in the vertical position to provide support fro the trailer and its contents..

Important Safety Note: In both vertical and horizontal positions, the plunger must be securely fastened into the mounting bracket’s mating hole.

Swing-Away Swivel Operation – Step-by-Step

  1. Secure the trailer: Ensure the hot dip galvanised trailer is on stable ground before operating the jack.
  2. Pull the plunger pin: Remove the U-bolt from the opening.
  3. Swivel the jack: Rotate the jack to the desired position.
  4. Rotate and secure: Rotate the jack until the plunger pin snaps securely into the hole of the mounting bracket.

Investing in a quality jockey wheel or stand is essential for safe and convenient trailering. Choose the right one for your needs and enjoy hassle-free towing!

Always be aware of the load rating -this is a maximum load and when checking or setting up your new trailer, you should design/check that this is adhered to. The load rating should be roughly 10% of your trailers GTM. However, the actual load being transferred to the jockey wheel and coupling should be approx. 5%.
